Look in the doc how to replace these characters. But first, try decoding the MP3 to WAVE and playing it with aplay. Then directly with MPlayer. Lastly, configuring ALSA so that the most useful output is the default is a must. It is possible to use kernel module options to change the order of the cards. I do not know if it is possible to used kernel module options to change the order of the subdevices in a single card.
