I presume that you're wanting to compare each of these? It's normal to
only install one desktop environment, but they SHOULD co-exist
peacefully.

You don't appear to have any network connection in your VM, this is
probably why the download was so slow.

So, first of all, what is your network setup in VirtualBox? NAT should
work with most setups. Next up, run "ip address" in the VM and check
that eth0 has been given an address (If you are using NAT, expect a
10.0.x.y address). Lastly, type "cat /etc/resolv.conf" in the VM and see
if the "nameserver" address looks sane (you can also try pinging it to
see if you can reach your DNS server).
