That isn't per se a mistake. I would say that it is much the best choice. If it caused you problems you must have installed it wrongly. I always use the netinstall - but you have to let it get the majority of the packages from the internet. That is the point!! You aren't intended to stop at what is on the CD. In fact, you would normally have to make a point of of stopping, because it intrinsically wants to go on. Of course, if you were installing on a computer that was not connected to the internet, then you would have had problems, and it was indeed the wrong choice.
