Thanks for this. Quoting from it,
"I ended up disabling clearing of tty1 and my autologin so I could
read the messages, but I would rather have them logged somewhere."

Does anyone know how to disable clearing? (I've had --noclear in
/etc/inittab for years but that ceased working with jessie.)
