I'm not sure what that's about. > > Yes, I'd certainly think the latter, and fsck/chkdsk it. > > Why not? How about those smartmon thingies? Oo, gosh, that's far too modern for me. Oh, OK. I think that's just a symptom of the disconnect: - Mar 9 18:01:37 allegro kernel: [34452.783990] usb 1-4.3: USB disconnect, device number 6 The plug "pulled", as it were. - Mar 9 18:01:37 allegro udisksd[1059]: Cleaning up mount point /media/kupfer/external (device 8:17 no longer exist) udisks daemon notices it's gone (no timing info) - Mar 9 18:01:37 allegro kernel: [34453.236267] Buffer I/O error on device sdb1, logical block 39027202 - Mar 9 18:01:37 allegro kernel: [34453.236272] lost page write due to I/O error on sdb1 - Mar 9 18:01:37 allegro kernel: [34453.236275] JBD2: Error -5 detected when updating journal superblock for sdb1-8. Either the process that was writing to the device when it suddenly disappeared, or perhaps something to do with udisks's actions. - Mar 9 18:01:38 allegro kernel: [34453.327437] usb 1-4.3: new high-speed USB device number 7 using ehci-pci Now it's "plugged" back in. - [...] - Mar 9 18:01:38 allegro kernel: [34453.623357] usb 1-4.4: new high-speed USB device number 8 using ehci-pci And here comes the thumbdrive. Could it be nothing more than a dicky plug contact? I don't use automount so I'd rattle the connectors around and see if I got lots of connect/disconnect messages. If it's a powered hub running off a wall-wart, it might be the power rather than the data cable.
