I'm having a similar problem with Sid. gnome-session would die complaining that it couldn't find Verdana 10. I reverted fontconfig from version 2.2.1-9 to 2.2.1-8 and everything is working again. If you're running Sarge though, fontconfig should already be at 2.2.1-8, so this probably won't be much help.
