Check that /proc is mounted.  Filesystem mounts may be (likely _will_
be) incorrectly represented if not.

Check that /etc/mtab (***NOT*** /etc/fstab) is correctly updated.   You
can:

    cat /proc/mounts > /etc/mtab

...if necessary to ensure this.
