Either by selecting 'Switch session' in said screensaver, or pressing an
appropriate 'Ctrl-Alt-F' sequence on a keyboard, then logging in and
entering 'startx'.

That 'switch session' in a screensaver is about the only redeeming
quality of Display Managers IMO.
