What is the recommended way for switching to wheezy-backports and MATE
1.8? This is what I'm thinking:

using:

# wheezy stable
deb http://ip/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
deb http://ip/debian-security stable/updates main contrib non-free

apt-get update
apt-cache search ^mate

you can use mate 1.6

Pol, thank you for your reply.

I'm afraid I didn't quite understand what you're proposing. AFAIK, MATE desktop is /not/ available in the stable (wheezy) repository. It was only recently packaged for Debian and it's available in jessie and wheezy-backports only. If I am correct, apt-cache search ^mate should return nothing (if the stable repos are the only ones enabled in sources.list). Am I missing something?

following what you wrote you can use mate1.8 and upgrade it from main
debian repository :-)

3. apt-get -t wheezy-backports install mate-desktop-environment-extras

4. Remove repo.mate-desktop.org from sources.list

Is this OK?

yep
