Write delay may be). The dmesg command doesn't read the file, but queries the kernel ring buffer, whose contents may or may not end up dumped into that file at some point. The default ring-buffer size is 16K, and dmesg asks for that much data from the buffer by default. If you know that the buffer on your system is larger, you can ask for more data from the buffer with the '-s' option.
