I've done this at least twice, maybe more. That being said, perhaps the reason I failed to install a *Debian* dual-boot was because I shut off Secure Boot from the BIOS instead of Windows. > > 4. OK, actually only three, but the way they wear out laptops, it feels like a million. So, in the past 5 years, I've bought close to 10 laptops. On every one, I've booted Linux, at the very least just long enough to copy the "restore partition" off to a backup machine. But, one and only one of those machines was impossible to turn off Secure Boot. In that case it didn't matter because it was destined to be a Windows-only computer (for one of my kids to use at college), but I *have* seen one computer on which you could not turn off Secure Boot. This is why I buy all my laptops at Costco. If for some reason it doesn't run Linux, I can return it within 90 days, no questions asked, no restocking fee. Just make sure you preserve that restore partition so that you can give them back a working Windows computer.
