Thanks so much for this.  It's particularly useful for anyone 
who must use skype for linux on a box with a sempron 
processor.  As with recent versions of flash, the newest 
skype won't run at all on this processor.  

The avoidance of pulseaudio is a plus, of course, but I must 
confess than time has inured me to its attendant 
frustrations.
