It's very useful.  Consider the yearly savings in electricity.  And if you
simply run non-RAIDed external USB drives for backup - they only spin for a few
minutes each day to rsync your data to the backup location.  This will almost
surely ensure long drive life.

Also, lots fun playing with the GPIO... But I'm an EE, so perhaps my source of
happiness is a bit skewed...
