Debian (Wheezy 7.5) is the first distro I've seen where this happens. You reboot, and eth0 doesn't work and neither does lo. It's intermittent enough I can't give you an exact reproduction sequence. Sometimes its one, sometimes it's the other, sometimes it's both. Especially when lo goes bad (whatever that turns out to mean), you get really strange symptoms happening. I think it messed up my sound, which I wrongly fixed by uninstalling Pulseaudio. Lack of a functional lo ruins my Dovecot IMAP's connectivity. It does a lot of other bad stuff that doesn't scream "Your lo is bad!". Anyway, I do the following as root: ifdown lo ifup lo And then the weird symptoms go away. Sometimes I need to do this for eth0 too. So, if you start having weird stuff happen, just for fun, ifdown and ifup lo, and see if it changes anything.
