That seems to bring me closer to identifying the solution

$ cat /mnt/etc/adjtime  # 'Other' debian
2290.176610 1402320390 0.000000
1402320390
LOCAL


$ cat /etc/adjtime 
0.000000 1402323871 0.000000
1402323871
UTC


A preliminary google tells me I can just remove these files, set the clock and 
that should be good.
Right?
