Many musicians are member of collecting societies. The celebrity
musicians benefit from the mafia-like approach of those collecting

That is their choice, isn't it? Nobody forces them to join.
But it also gains them protection. Many don't have the time or the
means to follow up on copyright violations; the RIAA has both.
