My thoughts: If you're running testing, then it's reasonable you get updates. If there are lots, and they're not impacting you, it's a minor irritation. But use stable if you don't want them. Having Ubuntu around, and based on Debian, is a good thing, in my view. Many interesting and useful packages have come back, and no doubt many bugs have been found and fixed due to more users. Also there are probably more third-party packages built for Ubuntu, that are then built for Debian because it's relatively easy, than there were before. No more trying to work with RPM-only software. Debian generally tries to push fixes upstream where that makes sense, and it's reasonable for Ubuntu to do the same thing - with the addition that packaging updates will often also make sense for Debian, where they won't for the upstream author. In summary - I think the net effect is positive, despite preferring Debian to Ubuntu.
