OK so you have no deb-multimedia packages installed now? What DE are you running? Have you tried another e.g. LXDE or XFCE? Have you tried a liveCD? (maybe a hardware issue?) Are there any clues in .xsession-errors? Are there any clues in /var/log/Xorg logfiles? P.S.
