IMO there's no need for a user to know all the details, however, something FreeBSD port like, e.g. Arch Linux IMO is more pleasant than Linux from scratch. It's also possible to learn about Linux, by using FreeBSD, e.g. Debian's FreeBSD instead of Linux.
