You don't need to do that, but unfortunately sometimes it's needed to
set up everything yourself, even for distros that try to install a
complete Linux, with X, DE and useful apps by default. Often you still
get the binaries by packages, you only need to edit the configurations
or to build only a kernel module.
When being short in time, it's better to stay with something that's
working and to install something new, when you've got the time to do it.
To get rid of the click noise, you likely have to spend some time.
You could post the output of
ps -eF
and
ls -hAl /etc/init.d/
perhaps somebody on the list then notice something that might be related
to the issue.
I am willing to stay with Debian and avoid the burden of installing
(many) software packages not available in opensuse 13.1, but if I can't
have any info about my current problem, I will not have a choice but to
give up debian.
I would prefer a predictable OS rather than an OS with surprises.
