so, your configuration would be the same as for mine regarding kernel
(2.4.22), gcc (uccellina:~!72> gcc --version -- gcc (GCC) 3.3.2
(Debian)) and the use of ide-scsi on a laptop.

Have you got anything configured especially?  Module loading?  Access
rights?  How do you access your cdrom?
