I had the "Not authorized" problem back when Wheezy was in testing.  I
used openbox and pcmanfm, with no Gnome, etc.  It turned out to be
something with policykit, if I remember correctly.  But I can't remember
the details.  Anyway, maybe that gives you something to search for.
