Was the crash caused by the HD or any other reason? In any case your best bet would be to remove the HD, connect it to another computer, maybe using a USB-adapter and proceed from there on. If the HD was not the cause make an image of the disk with clonezilla before you proceed. Then mount it R/O and simple cp to recover the data. If the HD went bad then having the disk in a known good machine might better your chances with ddrescue - provided the disk still spins and the heads did not crash.
