Unfortunately yes, I confirm this misbehaviour. I didn't move ~/.opera, but deleted Google in the list of search engines. After a restart Google appears as the default search engine again. This is on Arch Linux # opera -version Opera 12.16 Build 1860 for Linux x86_64, IOW the same version as for Debian, by http://deb.opera.com/opera/pool/non-free/o/opera/ . I've got some very old versions of Opera too, for Suse 11.2 and FreeBSD.
