Could be either. The card reader in question may be too old to
recognize sdhc cards. What does running lsusb tell you? Do you
see anything dmesg output related to the reader when you plug it in, or
put a card into it? You mentioned it is a multi-slot reader. Do you
have other cards that you can use with it? If so, does it recognize
them, but not the 4g sd card? Do you have a standard sd as opposed to
an sdhc card that you could test with the reader? Are you trying this
reader for the first time, or did it work for you before with this sdhc
card on another computer/operating system?
