Correct but even some that were in the sunlight for around 10 years here
still are ok, OTOH some that were protected are broken after a few
weeks. CD and DVD aren't good medias for backups and archiving.

Quite the contrary, the ease of duplicating the media makes them very good for archiving. Yes, you may get a bad batch but that can be said about any medium. However it's a lot easier to make multiple copies of a disc than it is to make multiple copies of a tape or hard disk drive.
