Yes, that was indeed the problem. An `aptitude remove grml-etc-core` fixed things, removing various grml-related packages and zsh in the process. After this I was able to successfully re-install zsh. I'd originally installed Debian on this machine via grml2hd, which is no longer supported. Thanks for the quick & helpful reply!
