This is what I was asking for, not the model of the computer. Is Acer AL1914 the LCD screen you have? If so, it is 19" not 14" and is not all that old, about 7 years. It has a single DB-15 D-Sub connector, and max 1280x1024 resolution at 32 bpp. Monitor obsolescence occurs much more slowly than PCs so age isn't much of an issue. The Samsung SyncMaster 940BW I'm using right now I acquired in 2007. It's not much newer than yours. It is a 19" widescreen with DVI and D-Sub, 1440x900 at 32 bpp. > can anyone tell me why it worked. The difficulty in getting many mundane hardware peripherals to work in Linux is one of the key reasons it has not penetrated the desktop world to any significant degree, at least not in N. America and Europe, although in Europe some governments have apparently deployed it at scale on the desktop, specifically Germany, as SuSE has roots there. > but please do explain me , anyone , why above configuration work for me, > even my card model is deifferent still my moniter is unknown. > my hardware model is "Dell 460 workstation with nvidia fx3500" The 2D circuitry of the FX 3500 and GT 240 are similar enough that the driver configuration works. Compiz and other OpenGL apps may or may not as the 3D circuitry is quite different. The FX 3500 is from the 2006 era, the GT 240 from 2009. You may want to plug in the appropriate info for your GPU and monitor if you plan to use OpenGL. -- Stan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
