i do have an ATI RADEON graphics card with 256MB DDR
Looks like you're running stable (Woody). It's likely that your graphics card isn't supported in the older version of xserver-xfree86 in Woody. I would try upgrading to testing (Sarge) -- It has a newer version of X.
I struggled with an ati radeon ve for some days, then I installed Xfree 4.3.0 (downloaded directly from www.xfree86.org) and it all worked fine with a simple XFree86 -configure as illustrated in the INSTALL file.
