I see a major disconnect here. Playing with something new is not day-day use. You can buy a used box for a couple hundred bucks, or far less. Do so, install what you like, and play with it. It doesn't need to be stable for day-day, and you can learn something about relatively new software and its flakiness. Or, there are a gazillion VM solutions available for precisely this purpose.
