If you use GNOME 2 now and you upgrade to Wheezy then you will be upgraded to GNOME 3 which as you know is quite different. > I dread having to learn all the details of how to configure and use > Wheezy once it becomes stable. Remember that Squeeze will have security support for a long time. It will very likely be supported for around two years. You can continue to use Squeeze after Wheezy is released. So there is no hurry to move if you don't want to move. If you want to upgrade or install Wheezy such as for new hardware support then there are various options available to GNOME 2 users. One is that you can switch to XFCE or LXDE both of which are traditional full featured desktop environments that are very similar to GNOME 2. Many people have migrated from GNOME 2 to XFCE and didn't have too much trouble going to it. You could try MATE or another of the GNOME 2 fork projects that will be around keeping GNOME 2 alive. I haven't tried these but many people have reported good results using them. I expect GNOME 2 to be alive for some time as a fork. It reads to me that your primary concern is in configuring the desktop? All I can recommend is to try it and then if you have problems to ask questions. There is a lot of good support here. Bob
