This is the /etc/lilo.conf generated by the new
kernel:

boot=/dev/hda4
root=/dev/hda4
compact
install=/boot/boot.b
map=/boot/map
vga=normal
delay=20
image=/vmlinuz
label = Linux
read-only
append="quiet hdc=ide-scsi"

There is no /etc/rc.d/rc.modules. There is just one
thing in /etc/rc.d, the directory /init.d which
contains one file modules.init:
#Modules initialization
#
#Start up the module auto-loading daemon
/sbin/kerneld

#Mount all currently unmounted auto-mounted partitions
/sbin/mount -a

Finally, since I know that people cannot keep up with
the whole thread, I do not boot from the lilo.conf
above, but from lilo on another partition. I tried to
copy the contents of the lilo above to the working
lilo. However, I had to cancel the line hdc=ide-scsi
because I could not use my cdrom with the line
present.
