I am quite sure i got to download an bz2 file while i should have been blocked by the captive portal. I would have to recheck this on monday morning.
Sure apt would wonder why it most probably was served nd index html file asking it to identify itself ;) Well atleast the problem have been solved, even as self inflicted as it was. Did you actually look at the data you were getting back from wget?
