That should not be a problem, you can happily mount stuff over other stuff (the other stuff will be invisible then and lead to confusion between df and du, but apart from that, it’s fine). Could it maybe be possible that the kernel somehow does not recognize /dev/ad0s1 as a block device? If I try to mount "/var/log/syslog", mount appears to set up a loop device automatically, which then leads to some confusion as mount.ntfs complains that there is no NTFS header there.
