Yes, and you don't need to say 
su root.  
Just
su 
is enough.  
Debian by default does not allow booting into a GUI as root.

But I prefer (mutatis mutandis, I use KDE3):
alt-F2
gksu gedit
enter password when asked.
( I actually do: alt-F2, kdesu kwrite)
