Ah yes, that's right! > >> It would probably be best to incorporate this as a default in a newbie >> install. > > In my opinion that would be a bad idea. I would argue for the successful, fully-operative installation first. Once access is there - to so many mediums - that education, along with many other aspects, would be a matter of informed choice also. But I think exposure and the resultant acceptance level need priority. Without that there's no appreciable change in market acceptance level. > >> Perhaps a note to explain this could be incorporated - 'If you are new >> to >> open source free software, we recommend that you accept this option'- or >> something along those lines might be appropriate. > > Debian is currently investigating *possibly*[1] removing any reference > to non-free that might be considered a recommendation, in order to be > accepted by the FSF as a free distro. > > [1] Debian may still end up keeping references to non-free if it > considers the service to the users is more important than acceptance by > the FSF. I think that also would be a matter of individual choice, which, after all, is Stallman's maxim. I'm certainly heading in that direction as far as attitude goes, at least. I look forward to greater implementation of HTML5 so that I can dump Flash, for example. Who knows? There could well be a fork in the future, with developers working on both.
