Let's ask APT (assuming one has the relevant sources in sources.list) $ apt-cache policy less less: Installed: 444-4 Candidate: 444-4 Version table: *** 444-4 0 500 http://ftp.at.debian.org/debian/ sid/main i386 Packages 500 http://ftp.at.debian.org/debian/ wheezy/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 436-1 0 500 http://ftp.at.debian.org/debian/ squeeze/main i386 Packages As you can see, version 444 is in both sid (unstable) and wheezy (currently testing). Wheezy is frozen (that mean no new versions of software) since 30 Jun, so it is highly unlikely that less version 451 will make it into wheezy. Your only chance would be stable-backports, as soon as it is available (usually shortly after a release) and the new less has migrated to testing.
