I don't get that behaviour although I'm using a different set of tools (Lenny, GNOME and Pan as newsreader) but indeed, what you describe it works fine here. I would try if this works as it should from a LiveCD with an updated KDE SC version (4.9) just to make a comparison test: if neither works it can be a bug or something you can suggest to be implemented for future releases.
