(To anyone) Do you prefer fontconfig with the autohinter or bytecode interpreter? I'm trying to decide how to set it up.

Just pick one. If you don't like it you can just
dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig
That present you with the various configuration options again (the same as when you first installed).
