How about?: Create a partition on USB stick. Format it ext2/3/4. Mount the partition on /mnt. Install GRUB to the MBR of the stick grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sdX and copy the grub.cfg on your hard disk to /mnt/boot/grub. Boot from the USB stick.
