All you have done till "modprobe usb-storage" is OK. Now you have to modify your /etc/fstab file adding the following line:
/dev/sda1 /usb vfat user,noauto 0 0
(device) (mount point) (filesystem type) (other features)
After that, you can mount the device as it is usual.
This procedure has been succesfully for my ARGOSY HD-530 of 40GB working under Debian Linux Woody.
