Yes, both applications share the same purpose though you only need one of them installed to get the notifications. But I think this has changed a bit since gnome-shell. In GNOME2 and GNOME3 (the latter with the classic desktop or fallback mode) "notification-daemon" is the default and also started on login but gnome-shell has its own notification server system aside from these two. "notify-osd" is an altaernative notification system in the line of "notification-daemon", I mean, I don't know if it works inside a gnome- shell session with no previous tweking. > This is on sid. You can also try the usual thing: create a new user, login and check if the notifications are working (configure first the startup daemon for notifications as needed).
