I did that and still no go. 

I notice that during install. I get this message. "Removing any system startup 
links for /etc/init.d/cups ..."

/etc/init.d/cups is not there? The same upgrade here went without a
hitch. Try 'apt-get remove cups' followed by a reinstall.
