aptitude. AFAIR, it was the recommended one for Debian. (A while back,
I remember that Debian recommended aptitude and Ubuntu wanted apt.

A sample of an attempted upgrade on my wife's sid machine is available
at http://paste.debian.net/156058/. Note that the following unmet
dependencies:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:

libavutil51: Conflicts: libavutil-extra-51 but 4:0.8.0.1+b1 is to be
installed.
  libavutil-extra-51: Conflicts: libavutil51 but 5:0.10-0.0 is installed.
open: 47; closed: 361; defer: 4; conflict: 4

resulted in wanting to uninstall all or most of KDE4.

The second choice was

Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?] n
open: 102; closed: 415; defer: 9; conflict: 15
.The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

     Remove the following packages:
1) libasound2-plugins
2) pulseaudio
3) pulseaudio-esound-compat
4) pulseaudio-module-x11

Keep the following packages at their current version:
5) libavutil-extra-51 [Not Installed]

     Leave the following dependencies unresolved:
6) speech-dispatcher recommends pulseaudio

and the third was

.The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

Keep the following packages at their current version:
1) libasound2-plugins [1.0.24-3 (now)]
2) libavutil-extra-51 [Not Installed]

...which should have been, I would think, the first choice.

Finally,
