$ sudo ifup -v eth2
Configuring interface eth2=eth2 (inet)

ifconfig eth2 10.100.101.101 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 10.100.101.255

up
 route add default gw 10.100.101.1 eth2
SIOCADDRT: File exists
Failed to bring up eth2.

It IS up! Where is this file--simply get rid of it?

sudo ifdown eth2 said:
ifdown: interface eth2 not configured

Rerunning ifup, no change. It IS up!
