See if your gdm3 appear on the list given by $ service --status-all (this is on sbin, should be run as root)

If it is, you should be able to do $ service gdm3 restart

But that may not reload X, as gdm3 is just a display manager (unless gdm3 is configured to restart xinit along with it, but that I can't tell you).
