I was in synaptic when this-the above happened, so I went down into a 
console & then stuff did install. Ergo a problem with synaptic.

I've uninstalled & reinstalled synaptic & now the issue is with apt not 
reading my updated .source list; apt installed an older version of 
synaptic .

But, I need to pack & go on holiday *YAY*, so I will attend to this 
stuff when I get back.
