Hi, all:

What an appalling piece of crap is GNOME3! (IMNSHO anyway.)

Well I wouldn't be so strict. I think many people will eventually like it. But I agree that personally I just don't likr it, preferring certain 'traditional' paradigms such as a desktop to clutter up with stuff :)

I can see that as Camaleón suggested further in the thread, it will probably be possible to tweak almost everything, but there is a first appeal sensation which has always been very positive with GNOME2 and now XFCE which wasn't with GNOME3.

So I installed xfce4 (the metapackage which installs all the basics and
some extras).

So did I.

Xfce session then shows up as an option on the login
screen. When I logged in, the new Xfce panel asked me if I wanted to
migrate from an old setup (I had used xfce4 a long time ago) and so I
did that, and my old familiar desktop is restored.

I had lurked at trying XFCE seriously and this was a good occasion, so I decided (on my laptop) to try the hard way and remove most of gnome keeping only network-manager and nm-applet. I guess I can use this as a learning experience (ha to look into low-level files I would usually not touch). Still some issues but hopefully I will resolve them

Perhaps others who dislike GNOME3 (does anyone not??) would like to
try Xfce4. I always liked it, especially on a machine with low
resources. That's no longer my situation, but I prefer its lean look
and footprint.

I think this is going to happen quite a bit. Probably also related to people not liking the new Ubuntu (unity?) so much and switching to xbuntu also shipping xfce. Mint also now has an xfce version IIRC... Maybe it would be nice to set up 'something' (TM) (a mailing list, blog, wiki) for ex-gnome users to share experiences, issues etc.?

Lorenzo.

Exactly what I did. Playing with xfce4-wmdock-plugin as we speak.
