So I've installed Compiz with all of the necessary packages, and I just can't get it to work. I have installed all of the nvidia drivers.
here are some outputs so you know what I'm working with --

Output of "lspci | grep -i vga"
00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] (rev a2)

Output of "glxinfo | grep render"
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 6150SE nForce 430/PCI/SSE2
GL_NVX_conditional_render, GL_SGIS_generate_mipmap, GL_SGIS_texture_lod,

Also, I'm running 64-bit with Gnome if that's relevant. The Composite extension is enabled in xorg.conf. I've added all the lines to xorg.conf as recommended by the compiz page on the Debian wiki. It should work, but it isn't. The final command to enabling compiz is to type into terminal "compiz --replace &" Here's the output of that command:
----------
root@XXXX-PC:/home/XXXX# compiz --replace &
[1] 5566
root@XXXX-PC:/home/XXXX# compiz (core) - Warn: SmcOpenConnection failed: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported
Backend     : gconf

Initializing place options...done

(compiz-decorator:5575): GConf-CRITICAL **: gconf_client_set_string: assertion `val != NULL' failed
----------
In addition to not working, the workspaces are reduced to 2, and I can't switch workspaces or add more.

As I previously stated, according to every guide and forum post I've read, this should work. But it just isn't.
