The little joystick on the > Thinkpads is a decisive advantage. So much so that when I bought my Lenovo Thinkpad R61 on 2008-05-05 I eschewed the touchpad entirely in favour of the point stick -- and saved $50 on the order. I have also eliminated mice from my two desktops by using a pair of Lexmark keyboards with what Lexmark called an Accupoint when I purchased them in 1998. There are no longer Lexmark branded keyboards, but I think there are other keyboard brands with a point stick. When I ordered the R61 I ordered the smallest SATA drive available, 80 gb which had something called Vista on it. I swapped it out for a 300 gb drive which now has Lenny on it and is waiting to be upgraded to Squeeze, although the R61 has yet to complain about not being upgraded already. Having the 80 gb drive came in handy when two optical drives failed in succession within the warranty period. When sending the R61 back to Lenovo for repair I put the 80 gb drive, which had no personal data on it, back in it so the repair people would not be confused by Debian Etch, which was on the 300 gb drive at the time. By the way the Lenovo repair service was excellent; the problems with the optical drives were caused by the manufacturer rather than the laptop assembler. That R61 dating from 1998 is still going strong.
